There's might be a chance of illusions or disguised creatures, but I think we're better off approaching openly rather than trying to sneak in.
You sail north toward the eastern horn of Midgard, and after carefully avoiding the many rocks hiding in or jutting out of the water, you finally reach the island's grassy seashore.
Apple Basket: "No pier in sight, huh. Well, here's hopin' the hull doesn't get caught on somethin' sharp when the tide's low."
Once firmly anchored, you and your friends climb out of the boat, and up the short coastal ridge. Then, you decide to begin your visit of the island by meeting that pony-like creature you just saw, and find it gnawing on a tree's exposed root nearby.
The closer you walk to the creature, however, the less normal it looks; the teenager-sized, mostly bareskin equinoid appears to only wear swirls of green hair as a coat, while its red crest is fenced by four ivory horns — the likes of which you've never seen on a pony before.
Stranger yet, its almost completely bare tail poorly hides the distinct lack of key mammalian features under it. You're not sure how to feel about this.
Still, as you approach, the creature turns to stare at you with blank, yellow irises over dark, grey eyes. You tentatively offer your best smile in return, along with a friendly, not-too-forward greeting. Your companions wave politely.
Creature: "Uoy... Cigam evah uoy? Ereh eb ton dluohs uoy."
The creature's response sends your mind reeling for a moment. It seems to be speaking in another language, yet you feel like you can understand what it says.

our ring of alter sex! It is the most magical item of them all.
problem for us. It’s a challenge. ;)
...But... you never know. This mysterious new person and her family/friends might know something of magic that we don't.
Also yes, I agree on the "making allies and friends" angle. ;)
We shouldn't take chances on things like that.
On the other hand, we do know about the destruction and suffering that the Philosopher's Stone can cause if we don't get rid of it ASAP.
We need to ask and be sure first.
Also, in my opinion, Moonflower's mission is the first reason why we came to this island, as it's just as likely that Twilight or other magic knowledgeable ponies will have a way to purify or nullify the Philosopher's stone.
We're also not being very good friends with Moonflower, if we're only focusing on the Philosopher's Stone and putting her becoming a Shaman on the back burner.
While Moonflower might be okay with that for now, asking first is preferable.
We also need to know if there's something about the island here that makes possessing magic dangerous.
Just HAVING magic right here right now might be a bigger problem right now than having the Philosopher's Stone. And we need to know that before assuming that being here = philosopher stone solution ahead.
And of course we want to know what our new friend means about magic. That's why we're asking questions . . . I hope. If Maxord wins the roll for the next command I'm going to be sad.
Honestly, it's probably the philosopher's stone that's the worst of the magic items we have, and the armor, and the weapons, and... okay let's just talk it out and make it clear that we can leave behind the magic items we have that could harm the island/the world tree.
We're explorers, and we're looking to meet people and travel through this territory peacefully.
